Oscar de la Hoya Retires from Boxing, Not Boxing Biz

A tearful Oscar de la Hoya announced his retirement today from boxing after an amazing 17 years fighting, winning gold medals at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona and defending 10 world titles.

“I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s over,” the East Los Angeles native said. “It’s over inside the ring for me.”

He was accompnanied by his wife Mily, family, and celebrity friends comedian George Lopez and Oscar-nominated actor and former fighter Mickey Rourke. READ MORE

Despite retiring from fighting in the ring, Oscar De La Hoya has a booming boxing business, Golden Boy promotion, which includes deals with Tecate, TV networks (ESPN, HBO, Telefutura), and broke a record by selling over 2 million in pay-per-views. His company also has interest in ownership in several Spanish-language newspapers in major markets throughout the U.S., and select investments in a number of consumer products, as well as a 25% interest in the Houston Dynamo soccer team.

On a charity note, In 2005, Golden Boy Enterprises formed Golden Boy Partners, a company focused on urban development in Latino communities.

Celebrity Boxing Match: Jose Canseco vs. Danny Bonaduce

Former child actor Danny Bonaduce is ready to jump in the ring once again, this time against Cuban baseball/steroid snitcher Jose Canseco!
The fight, sanctioned by the Celebrity Boxing Federation, is scheduled for January 17th, 2009.
Here are some stats for the fighters.

•Danny Bonaduce: 5′6″, weighing 165 pounds. Former child actor on 70's sitcom The Partridge Family, a former radio host, is a black belt in Tang Soo Do, has won many celebrity fights agaisnt Donny Osmond, Barry Williams (Greg Brady on The Brady Bunch) and attorney Robert Shapiro. Authored an autobiography, Random Acts of Badness, which was on the New York Times bestseller list.

•Jose Canseco: 6′4″, 240 pounds. Former baseball slugger, has a twin brother, author of a tell-all book, Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant 'Roids, Smash Hits & How Baseball Got Big , and 5th season star on the WB's The Surreal Life

Despite the massive disadvantage in size Bonaduce says “The bigger they are, the harder they fall.” Meanwhile Canseco promises to knock him out in the first round. We hope not with a baseball bat.
